The romantic conception of orchestral music in the 19th century meant that the “orchestral instrument”, i.e. the organ, also underwent a major change from the organological point of view and also in the music written for it. The instrumental transformation was very noticeable thanks to the pneumatic machine invented by the engineer Charles Barker and which the French-Spanish organ builder, Aristides Cavaillé-Coll, applied for the first time in the organ of Sant Denis in Paris (1841). Let me explain: It is obvious that the more stops of the organ we use, the more wind is needed and therefore the harder the keys become to press. With Barker’s pneumatic machine this problem was solved, at last it was possible to build pipe-organs with up to five keyboards and play them all together with almost no effort. The success was such that by the end of the 19th century there were hundreds of romantic organs all over the world.

Large organ building firms were founded with such famous names as Merklin, Stölz, Walker, Didier, Puget, Amezua, etc. One of the areas most affected in this respect was the Iberian Peninsula and especially the Basque Country, which preserves one of the most important collections of Romantic organs in the world for two reasons: Firstly for being adjacent to the Gallic country and secondly for being the summer residence of the Spanish court and different European courts.

Music was quickly influenced by the new instrument and the pioneer composer was César-Franck thanks to the organ for which he composed all his work: the ¨Cavaillé-Coll” of the church of St. Clotilde in Paris (1859). French organ music and French organs went from being ignored and reviled after the French evolution to being the most sought-after organs in the world in less than a century.

Today’s concert programme represents the fruit of the musical explosion of romanticism, with the city of Paris as the nerve centre of influence: Melanie Bonis was a pupil of César Franck, Jesus Guridi studied in Paris and Brussels, Franz Liszt worked and lived in Paris; and finally, Eduardo Torres Pérez, the chapel master of the cathedral of Seville who was never able to visit Paris, but as you can hear, the influence of composers like Louis Vierne on his music is very evident. Enjoy!
