Organist

Campiani” in Mantua.

Masini” in Forlì.

A. Esposito, Variazioni sull’Ave Maria di Fatima

In the huge Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, Op. 607, Czerny shows off his mastery of the organ (his father was an organist, as was Czerny himself), and counterpoint. He shows to have learnt Bach and Mendelssohn’s lessons, especially in the monumental double fugue, together with a pre-romantic taste.

J. Brahms, Choral “Herzlich tut mich verlangen” op. 122/9, Choral “O Welt, ich muss dich lassen” op. 122/11

In this last set of his works, Brahms’s choice of the Chorales – “Herzlich tut mich verlangen” and “O Welt, ich muss dich lassen” – is particularly poignant, made, as it was, at the time when he first came to realize that his own days were numbered. To his friends, he dismissed his sallow complexion as merely the result of a case of jaundice, but he surely recognized this alarming symptom of cancer of the liver, the disease to which his father had succumbed. All attempts at treatment were inevitably in vain, and on 3 April 1897, Johannes Brahms died, leaving his final musical essays for organ unpublished.

M. Bonis, Sortie op. 96

Pupil of César Franck, Mélanie Bonis‘ post-romantic style of her oeuvre corresponded well to her times and is quite varied, ranging from dramatic to humorous, often vigorous and sensual, with occasional oriental excursions, always well written and marked by great expressiveness. Her writing is very personal and easily identifiable by the originality of its harmonies and rhythms.

V. Petrali, Adagio per voce umana

Organist in Bergamo and Cremona, Petrali experiences the change between symphonic-theatrical organ creativity and the nascent Cecilian Movement. In this Adagio, Vincenzo Petrali merges all the Italian operatic taste of the 19th century into a beautiful melody, while maintaining a sober and elegant style.

J. Rheinberger, Sonata n° 4 “Tonus peregrinus” op. 98, Tempo moderato / Intermezzo / Fuga cromatica

This Sonata has its leitmotiv in the Tonus Peregrinus: considered by many to be the IX Gregorian mode, the T. P. differs from the other eight official modes in having two strings of recitation (repercussio). The Latin meaning is precisely that of a foreign, wandering tone, and depends on the fact that historically this melody has often been associated with the singing of Psalm 144 “In exitu Israel de Aegypto”, a psalm that preludes the forty-year wandering in the desert of the chosen people.

H. Howells, Master Tallis’s testament, from Six Pieces for Organ

Howells considered this composition as to be one of his most “significant” works. It captures the essence of the “Second English Renaissance” of Howells, Vaughan Williams, and Holst et al with its seamless blending of sixteenth century modality and twentieth century sensuality. The work is essentially a set of gradual variations on the opening theme, each subsequent variation growing in intensity, complexity and volume. The tone of the piece at the beginning is that of a restrained pastoralism, with the modal G minor gently washing against the numerous “Tudor” chromatic inflections.

A. Esposito, Variazioni sull’Ave Maria di Fatima

Like a small improvisation, the Italian composer Alessandro Esposito takes us to Fatima, with the melody of the famous religious chant, mixing tradition with a musical language of the late 20th century.
